MANILA, Philippines – Former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Tuesday announced he would seek the presidency in the 2022 national elections.
Marcos made the announcement via a Facebook video, the same day he took his oath as a new member of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP).
“I am announcing here today my intention to run for the presidency of the Philippines in the coming May 2022 elections,” he said.
Marcos said he wants to bring back “unifying leadership” in the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bongbong is the son and namesake of the late President Ferdinand Marcos.
In the 2016 polls, he sought the vice presidential post but lost to then Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo.
