UniTeam: Improved mass transport key to solving Metro Manila traffic woes

11 February 2022

INSTEAD of merely increasing the number of skyways that can result in more vehicles plying the streets, the UniTeam is proposing to improve Metro Manila's mass transport system to solve the perennial heavy traffic problem.

Presidential candidate Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. and his running-mate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte made the push as they recognize the urgent need for reliable and cost-effective travel for commuters as the economy recovers from the effects of the Covid19 pandemic.

"Improving our mass transport system is the best long-term solution to address our traffic problem.  Merely increasing road capacity is not the only way to go about it.  Urban planners noted that, it can even worsen it.  We need to reduce the number of private cars on our roads," the UniTeam said.

According to a 2015 Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) study, almost nine in ten households in Metro Manila do not have automobiles and just rely on mass public transport for their daily commute.

"Our priority is to create an efficient mass public transport that would increase the mobility of the typical commuter.  Not only that, it should be comfortable so that people are encouraged to use it.  In addition, we will work on a seamless intermodal system that will be very convenient for all who will use it," the UniTeam added.

The UniTeam previously announced that its mass transportation blueprint includes modernizing the Pasig River Ferry System to provide alternative transportation for commuters and goods.

The UniTeam also aims to institutionalize the free rides at the Edsa Carousel Bus route in Metro Manila, which would give significant savings for daily wage earners and commuters.

The UniTeam is likewise mulling over proposals from various sectors to move government offices outside of Metro Manila to help further decongest the capital.

"It has been done before, and it gave the Metropolis ample breathing room to expand.  But now that our population has skyrocketed, and density has increased, we need to seriously consider doing it again without disrupting trade and basic services," the UniTeam said.

The UniTeam remains committed to continuing the Build, Build, Build program started by President Rodrigo Duterte and will also introduce enhancements to support the country's digital shift.

"Improving our mass transport system is the best long-term solution to address our traffic problem.  Merely increasing road capacity is not the only way to go about it.  Urban planners noted that, it can even worsen it.  We need to reduce the number of private cars on our roads," ayon sa UniTeam.

"Our priority is to create an efficient mass public transport that would increase the mobility of the typical commuter.  Not only that, it should be comfortable so that people are encouraged to use it.  In addition, we will work on a seamless intermodal system that will be very convenient for all who will use it," dagdag ng UniTeam.

"It has been done before, and it gave the Metropolis ample breathing room to expand.  But now that our population has skyrocketed, and density has increased, we need to seriously consider doing it again without disrupting trade and basic services," anang UniTeam.
