THE Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP), the country's biggest labor group, will support presidential candidate Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and his running mate, Sara Duterte-Carpio, in the May elections, TUCP president and party-list Rep. Raymond Mendoza said on Sunday.

The group will formally endorse the Marcos-Duterte-Carpio team and its senatorial ticket either Tuesday or Wednesday.

The organization claims a membership of around 1.2 million workers.

TUCP spokesman Alan Tanjusay said the group's decision to back the Marcos-Duterte-Carpio team was reached after a series of nationwide consultations with member labor groups and rank-and-file workers.

Tanjusay said workers in major industries such as service, agriculture, and manufacturing were consulted through online and hybrid face-to-face meetings which began late last year.

"The vote advantage of Mr. Marcos and Ms. Duterte-Carpio and with those four other pairs of presidential and vice presidential aspirants was very wide. It was an overwhelmingly majority decision in all caucuses held differently in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao," said Tanjusay.

He said the members chose Marcos and Duterte-Carpio over the tandems of Vice President Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo and Sen. Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan, Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domgoso and Dr. Willie Ong, Senators Panfilo "Ping" Lacson and Vicente "Tito" Sotto 3rd, and Sen. Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao and Joselito "Lito" Atienza.

Last December, the Philippine Trade and General Workers Organization, one of the TUCP's affiliates, announced its support for Domagoso.

The TUCP, which was founded by labor leader Democrito Mendoza in 1975, is affiliated with the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and the International Trade Union Confederation. During the 1980s it received funding worth $5.7 million from the United States Congress through the National Endowment for Democracy.
