SENATE local government chair Bongbong Marcos commended the local executives of Tacloban City in reviving the ‘Sangyaw’ Festival and putting the entire province back on the tourist map.
Marcos said the annual celebration of ‘Sangyaw’ which means to herald the news, strengthened local tourism and preserved the culture and heritage of the province of Leyte.
Former first Lady Imelda Marcos plied ‘Sangyaw’ Festival in 1974. It was discontinued and replaced by the ‘Pintados’ Festival by succeeding provincial executives who came from the parties who had opposed the Marcos-Romualdez leadership in the area.
In 2008, the City of Tacloban revived the ‘Sangyaw’ by mounting the yearly festivities to commemorate the historical importance of the event to the city and the province.
