SENATE candidate Robin Padilla recently rallied the support of the Muslim community for former senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas and his running mate, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats.

A Muslim convert, Padilla, speaking before a large crowd that gathered at the Manila Golden Mosque and Cultural Center in Quiapo last Saturday, recounted how Marcos' namesake and father, the late Ferdinand Marcos Sr., took the initiative to start peace negotiations to address the infighting in Mindanao.

"Noong panahon po na nagkaroon ng matinding labanan (sa Mindanao), noong pinaglalaban po ng Bangsamoro ang kanilang mga lupain at ang karapatang pamunuan ang kanilang mga sarili, naging madugo po ang labanan na 'yan, at noong panahon na 'yan, nakiusap ang Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Sr. kay (first lady) Imelda Marcos na pumunta sa Libya para makipag-usap kay Muammar Gaddafi para magkaroon ng peace talks (During the time there was turmoil in Mindanao, when the Bangsamoro was still fighting for their land, their right to rule it and their ranks, it was bloody and President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. asked first lady Imelda Marcos to go to Libya to talk to Muammar Gaddafi to initiate peace talks)," Padilla said.

"Du'n po ipinanganak ang (1976) Tripoli Agreement (which ended the fighting in Mindanao). Kasama po sa Tripoli Agreement ang Golden Mosque (in Quiapo) at Blue Mosque (in Taguig, where there is another large Muslim community), at nagkaroon ng mosque sa loob ng Malacañang (That gave birth to the 1976 Tripoli agreement, which ended the fighting in Mindanao. Included in the Tripoli Agreement is the Golden Mosque and Blue Mosque, and also a mosque inside Malacañang)," he added.

The accord also called for the establishment of two autonomous regions in Muslim Mindanao, but so far only one — the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao — has been set up under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Voting for Marcos and Duterte-Carpio, Padilla said, would help pave the way for Mindanao to have two autonomous regions.

Duterte-Carpio expressed gratitude to the Muslim community for allowing them to present their platforms of government.

"Salamat po sa inyong suporta. Dala-dala po namin ni Bongbong Marcos ang pagkakaisa para sa kaunlaran ng bansa. Humihingi po kami ng suporta sa inyo (Thank you for your support. Bongbong Marcos and I offer unity for the progress of the country. We are asking for your support)," she said.
