Vice presidential candidate and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Wednesday rejected initiatives by some of her supporters to push for her tandem with presidential hopeful Vice President Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo.
In a video message posted on her Facebook page, Duterte-Carpio said she will stick to her running mate, presidential candidate Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.
Marcos and Duterte-Carpio comprise the so-called BBM-Sara UniTeam, and they have been the frontrunners in the presidential and vice presidential surveys, respectively.
"Once again, let me reiterate that I am aware that many of you wish to see me with another presidential candidate. I take that as a sign of confidence in me as a leader, and for that I am truly, deeply touched and honored," Duterte-Carpio said.
"But I am a person, a woman, a leader who values commitment and word of honor. I am running for the position of vice president and my president is Bongbong Marcos," she added.
Duterte-Carpio's remarks came following the recent endorsement of Albay Second District Rep. Jose Maria Clemente "Joey" Salceda, Cagayan de Oro Second District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, and Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar of a Robredo-Sara tandem through their so-called ROSA movement.
Salceda said a Robredo-Sara leadership would be "good for the country, good for the economy, good for the provinces, and good for Mindanao."
The former Albay governor was one of the first government officials who expressed support for Robredo and Duterte-Carpio.
He said the tandem will be able to build up investor confidence in the Philippines and get the public to trust the government.
"The candidate that inspires confidence in the future is Vice President Leni Robredo. She knows her economics and she knows her law. She knows her governance too and practices," Salceda said. "Above all, like Mayor Sara, she listens. Both are obsessed with results."
Duterte-Carpio said she respects the preference of her supporters, but she reiterated that she cannot be with them on their decision.
"The presidency was the option for Apo BBM, as it was for me, I chose the vice presidency. When we agreed to form the UniTeam of Bongbong Marcos and Sara Duterte, we both agreed to come together with the singular purpose of improving the lives of the Filipinos and making the Philippines a stronger country," the Davao City mayor said.
"I intend to honor the commitment of my party, the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats and Hugpong ng Pagbabago — that is to support Bongbong Marcos as president. I continue to pray and call on all my friends to trust that the UniTeam will serve our country with fairness, love, honor and dedication," she added.
Marcos is the standard bearer the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, while Duterte-Carpio is running under the Lakas-Christian Muslim party.
