MORE than 300 doctors from General Santos City and nearby provinces have pledged to support presidential candidate Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and his running mate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio in the coming election.

The tandem met over the weekend with at least 20 doctors, who identified themselves "UniteaMD," from General Santos led by their spokesman and president of the medical society, Dr. Jun Demontaño.

Demontaño said they represent 380 doctors who believe that Marcos and Duterte-Carpio can help the medical society.

He said they are convinced the UniTeam has programs designed to improve the welfare of both health workers and the public health system.

"Alam namin na matutulungan kami ni BBM at Sara, lalo na sa pagsasaayos ng PhilHealth, hindi lang sa hospital pati sa mga doktor din, sa kanilang kakayahan at experience mapapalakas nila ang Universal Health Care (We know that Marcos and Sara can help us, especially in reorganizing PhilHealth, not just with the hospitals but the doctors as well. With their ability and experience, they can strengthen Universal Health Care)," Demontaño said.

He said doctors also need to be heard because they can give suggestions on how to improve the implementation of Universal Health Care and other programs.

Marcos, who is running under the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas banner, praised the sacrifice and efforts of the doctors and all health practitioners in battling the coronavirus pandemic.

"May I please express the gratitude of the Filipino people to all our frontliners, to our doctors, nurses and medical staff who work so hard over the last two years to keep us healthy. I know the sacrifices that you have made, the risk you have taken and yet you continue to work and be true to your oath, especially UniteaMD," he said.

"Your expression of support and trust is not only for our candidates but also for the idea and concepts and the cost of unity that we all believe in because it is something that is necessary so that our country will move forward. Maraming-maraming salamat sa inyong tulong, sa inyong suporta (Thank you very much for your help, your support)," he said.

Marcos said that if he and Duterte-Carpio win, they will give priority to the doctors, nurses and other health workers.
