THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday, September 15, turned down the request of the Senate and House of Representatives to extend the voters' registration period.

Comelec Commissioner Marlon Casquejo told the Joint Congressional Oversight Committee on the Automated Election System that the poll body has decided with finality not to entertain calls to extend the registration of voters beyond September 30.

Casquejo said extending the registration will affect their other deadlines including the preparation of precincts.

"Also, it will go with the filing of the (certificates of candidacy), which starts on October 1," he added.

The Senate on Tuesday night adopted Resolution 851 urging the Comelec to extend the registration deadline from Sept. 30, 2021 to Oct. 31, 2021 "to prevent voter disenfranchisement."

Sen. Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan said the September deadline was set before the pandemic.

"Nobody could have anticipated how this public health emergency would severely impact our daily lives, let alone voter registration," he said.

Sen. Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan said the September deadline was set before the pandemic.

"Nobody could have anticipated how this public health emergency would severely impact our daily lives, let alone voter registration," he said.

"While it is important for Comelec to be given enough time to prepare a final list of voters that is a prerequisite for the preparation and completion of its project of precincts or POP, we believe that a one-month extension will not delay Comelec's preparation," he stressed.

The senator pointed out that in previous elections since 2001, voter registration deadlines were set on or beyond October 31.
