Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr. has vowed to support Filipino boxers even as he gave them assurance that he would back measures being pushed in the Senate to promote the welfare of Filipino athletes.
Sen. Bongbong made the commitment on Wednesday (March 25, 2014) during the “14th Gabriel ‘Flash’ Elorde Boxing Awards Night: A Banquet of Champions” held at the Harbour Garden Tent of Hotel Sofitel in Pasay City.
“I am making this pledge before you all that our Filipino boxers and athletes can expect my full support as your legislator and as a fellow Filipino. Masugid kong susuportahan ang mga panukala sa Senado na naglalayong matulungan ang ating mga boksingero at mga atleta,” Sen. Bongbong said.
The senator also appealed to the government to provide tangible and concrete form of support to Filipino boxers and not just in the form of paper resolutions recognizing their victories.
“Ang aking punto ay dapat buo, makabuluhan at epektibo ang suporta ng gobyerno. The support should be right from the start. Dapat sa umpisa pa lang ng pagsabak sa training ay nand’yan na ang ating gobyerno upang tumulong,” he said.
Sen. Bongbong stressed that it is not enough for politicians to raise the hands of champion Filipino boxers during victory parades, but “the support must be existing and vigorous all throughout the entire journey of the athlete in his or her career.”
The senator was also given the honor to award the trophies to “Boxers of the Year” awardees, namely: Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, Jr., Donnie “Ahas” Nietes, John Riel “Quadro Alas” Casimero, and Merlito “Tiger” Sabillo.
A representative from Aldeguer Boxing Promotion accepted the trophy in behalf of Sabillo.
Sen. Bongbong likewise thanked the Elorde family led by its matriarch, Laura, and her children Johnny, Bebot, Cucuy, Rita, and Malou for their consistent efforts to help improve the state of Philippine boxing.
