Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr. is set to speak before 1,000 barangay officials from Region 5 on Thursday, April 3, 2014.
This developed as Sen. Bongbong, Chairman of the Senate Local Government Committee, confirmed his attendance as the Guest of Honor and Speaker of the “Region 5 Liga ng mga Barangay Regional Congress” to be held in Le Pavillon, Metropolitan Park, Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City. He is expected to speak at 1pm.
The congress will be attended by 1,000 delegates, more or less, all barangay officials of the region from the provinces of Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate and Sorsogon.
Sen. Bongbong is championing in the Senate the welfare of barangay officials all over the country, whom he considered as the frontline of public service.
At the onset of the 16th Congress on July 2013, he immediately filed Senate Bill No.12 entitled “An Act Providing Retirement Benefits to Barangay Officials, Including Barangay Tanods, Members of the Lupon ng Tagapamayapa, Barangay Health Workers and Barangay Day Care Workers“.
The bill seeks to provide retirement benefits to qualified Punong Barangay, Members of the Sangguniang Barangay, Barangay Treasurer and Secretary, Barangay Tanods, Members of the Lupon ng Tagapamayapa, Barangay Health Workers and Barangay Day Care Workers.
The proposed measure is in recognition of their dedication and contribution to public service even without regular salaries and financial benefits, which other employees of the government are entitled to.
At the resumption of the session next month, Sen. Bongbong will sponsor on the floor a committee report on the said bill, even as he vowed to push for its immediate passage and enactment.
