BILLIARDS legend Efren “Bata” Reyes and Asia’s first grandmaster Eugene Torre, two of the most prominent figures in Philippine sports, believe that Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. will be an effective chairman of the sports committee in the Senate.
“Mga kaibigan ko ang pinsan ni Bongbong at alam ko na mahal ng pamilya nila ang sports,” said Reyes, who was recently named Player of the Decade by the US Billiards Media Association.
Torre, who completed his GM requirements during the time of the late president Ferdinand E. Marcos, Sr., thinks the same way.
“Bata pa lang si Bongbong s’ya na ang representative ng kaniyang ama sa mga sports events,” said Torre. “As sportsman, I’d like him (Marcos) to win dahil alam ko na hindi n’ya pababayaan ang sports.”
The two graced the SCOOP sa Kamayan Forum on Friday at the Kamayan Restaurant in Padre Faura.
Reyes is set to compete in the World Pool Masters on May 12-16 in Las Vegas, Nevada while Torre is the founding chairman of the newly formed Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE).
Also present in the weekly forum were national women’s billiards team stalwarts Irish Ranola and Mary Ann Basas and two-time chess Olympian GM Jayson Gonzales.
