Finally, Supreme Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen has completed the draft decision for the poll protest of Ferdinand “Bong Bong” Marcos Jr. who is contesing the win of current Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo in the 2016 elections.
A news daily said that Leonen already submitted the 97-page draft resolution on January 12, 2021 with an accompanying two-page memorandum to Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta.
Leonen was earlier criticized for a one-year delay in promulgating the decision on Marcos’ poll protest. The Supreme Court is hearing Marcos’ poll protest sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET).
The confidential source of the news daily said that Leonen was leaning more to dismiss the poll protest of Marcos.
Also, the source said Leonen included in the draft decision quotes from the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu and the Bible.
“New Beginnings are often disguised as painful endings,” was what he cited from Lao Tzu.
“Then you will know the truth and the truth shall set you free,” was what he quoted from John 8:32 from the Bible.
“But part of surviving is being able to move on,” was the line he quoted from American author Alexandra Bracken’s book, The Darkest Minds.
In November last year, Marcos and Solicitor General Jose Calida asked the Supreme Court to inhibit Leonen from handling the poll protest case.
In his motion filed before the Supreme Court, Calida particularly cited a portion of Leonen’s dissent on the burial of the former president, which read: “Former President Ferdinand E. Marcos presided over a regime that caused untold sufferings for millions of Filipinos. Gross violatings of human rights were suffered by thousands. The public coffers contributed to by impoverished Filipinos were raided. Ferdinand E. Marcos stood by as his family, associates, and cronies engaged in systemic plunder. The national debt ballooned during the regime.”
The Supreme Court dismissed the petitions of Marcos and Calida also in November last year. SOVEREIGNPH
