Sen. Bongbong Marcos: SUCs Should Provide Quality Education for Filipino Students

Senator Bongbong Marcos emphasized the role of State Colleges and Universities and the problems regarding its proliferation during the Commencement Exercises of Capiz State University (CapSU) at Roxas City last March 28, Wednesday.

“SUCs are great help in our country as they educate those who are willing to study but could not afford the tuition fees in private colleges and universities,” said Marcos.

However, the senator, who authored Senate Bill 2188 or the Moratorium on the Creation or Conversion of State Universities and Colleges Act of 2010, believes that the quantity of SUCs does not guarantee quality education. He posed a solution for the problem on proliferation of SUCs that are not functional or those that are “just created for the vanity of politicians”. He said that the existing budget should be directed to a select number of SUCs that are proven to produce exceptional graduates and to conduct innovative researches.
Senate Bill 2188, which is now pending in the Committee on Education, Arts, and Culture, provides for suspension or moratorium in the creation of State Universities and Colleges to give the Congress and the CHED reasonable time to assess, monitor, and upgrade the educational system of higher education, and to assure that SUCs really provide the quality education for Filipino students.

At the end of his commencement speech, he motivated the graduates to remain focus in reaching their goals and to continue learning. “Don’t settle for what you know you can accomplish, but rather challenge yourself to pursue the impossible,” he said.
