Rise to Millennium Challenge: Speech at the 11th Foundation Day of Renaissance School of Science and Technology

Gov. Rebecca Ynares of the Province of Rizal, Mayor Armando San Juan of Morong, Rizal, Mayor Katherine Robles of Baras, Rizal, Cong. Erlinda Santiago, Cong. Rodante Marcoleta, other fellow public servants,

To the Renaissance School of Science and Technology (RSST) administration officials, teaching and non-teaching staff, led by RSST Chairwoman Cathy Guiyangco Curtis and its President Nelson Gonzales,

To the entire student body of RSST, other guests and friends, ladies and gentlemen,

Good morning to everyone!

Thank you very much for inviting me to join all of you this morning to celebrate the 11th Founding Anniversary of the Renaissance School of Science and Technology (RSST). It is an honor to commemorate the establishment of RSST, and also count and bank up yet another year of valuable service to the people and the community of Rizal and to the country.

On the one hand, as a parent, an occasion of this kind reminds me of the great and incomparable legacy of education, which we parents, as a collective Filipino social force, endeavor endlessly to inculcate in the minds of our children. Not to mention the fact that we parents also, on an individual basis, work tirelessly (to the point of breaking our backs) to be able to raise resources so that such legacy is imparted to them fully and completely.

On the other hand, as a legislator and public servant, this occasion provides me the opportunity to personally visit and pay tribute to a vanguard of education in the province of Rizal, which has proven itself to be an effective avenue through which the legacy of education is channeled to the youth of Rizal.

And of course, we also have to acknowledge our students, who are as much part and parcel of the success of this institution of learning.

As a purveyor of technical-vocational (“tech-voc”) education on this side of the country, RSST is on-track to becoming a leading producer of competent and able Filipino workers for the economy. According to TESDA, based on the combined performance of its 7-million strong graduates, the present employability of Filipino tech-voc graduates has grown to a historic high of 65% to 91% rate.

And there is sound economic logic for all this. For as long as applied science and technology continues to be the mainframe of our businesses and industries, which in turn are the great drivers of our economy, there certainly and always will be strong labor demand for our tech-voc graduates.

So on the occasion of its 11th Founding Anniversary, I take this opportunity to exhort the RSST family to always stay on course, and ever vigilant in setting its sights on reaching the goal of increasing the employability of its graduates to a perfect-100%.

The ongoing expansion efforts of RSST bear valid semblance to the idea of the “Renaissance man” or a “polymath”, which refers to a person with multiple talents and expertise, just like the famous Italian renaissance men Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo Galilei.

You do not have to seek very far and wide for the needed inspiration and guidance. The idea of “RENAISSANCE” is literally and figuratively etched in your school’s name and psyche…

Re (again) + naissance (birth).

Continued rebirth and revival. To always strive to transcend and flourish from the Dark Ages to Modernity—through education and the faculty of the mind and body. This historically rich idea is what should always inspire and motivate you within the halls of this institution of learning.

So to all the Renaissance men and women of RSST, I sincerely convey to you my heartfelt congratulations on the 11th year of your establishment. It is truly an honor for me to be part of this joyous occasion in the life of your institution and community.

To the administrators, educators, non-teaching personnel, the present roll of students and all the alumni and alumna of the school, you all deserve a pat on the back for all the efforts you have put in to possibly make RSST go this far! Kudos to you all!

Here’s to more years of propagation of high-quality education and worthwhile public service to the community by RSST!

Mabuhay ang Renaissance School of Science and Technology!
