Politics.com.ph – Like Australia, Philippines must rally vs Islamophobia — Bongbong Marcos
by Marlon Purificacion | Politics.com.ph
The Philippines should emulate Australia in showing solidarity with the country’s Muslim population with the #illridewithyou movement, according to Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
“Let’s all take a cue from Australia, a nation coming together against Islamophobia. We have Muslim brothers and sisters too. #illridewithyou,” Marcos tweeted.
Australia has shown the world how to combat Islamophobia with its #illridewithyou Twitter movement in the wake of a deadly hostage situation in Sydney. Under the solidarity campaign, ordinary Australians have offered to escort Muslims scared of being attacked on public transportation as a result of the siege. The campaign has drawn praises from many groups as a ideal way to battle bigotry during a crisis.
Some anti-Muslim sentiment was earlier stirred after an Iranian-born gunman held over a dozen people hostage in the Lindt café in downtown Sydney. The hostage-taker, along with two hostages, died in the shootout that ended the siege.
