Mindanao Gold Star Daily – Bongbong consults Naawan students on proposed ‘Katipunan ng Kabataan’
SEN. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. yesterday came for a dialogue with students at the Mindanao State University (MSU) in Naawan, Misamis Oriental.
The dialogue was made in line with Marcos’s bill aimed at empowering the Filipino youth.
Marcos, chairman of Senate committee on local government, is the author of the proposed Youth Development and Empowerment Act of 2014 in the Senate.
Speaking before hundreds of students, Marcos said he wanted to empower the youth sector the way it was before the scrapping of the Sangguniang Kabataan but at the same time, put in place safeguards so that the youth councils would not be exploited by traditional politicians.
The SK, based on Marcos’s bill, would be renamed “Katipunan ng Kabataan,” and citizens aged 15 years to 30 years would be its members.
He said he was saddened over the abolition of the SK over allegations that it has been used as a political tool by traditional politicians who taught young citizens how to engage in graft and corruption.
Marcos said the proposed Katipunan ng Kabataan should be given sufficient funds so that those running the youth councils would be independent from senior politicians.
Joining Marcos in the Naawan dialogue-consultation were Misamis Oriental Vice Gov. Jose Mari Pelaez, Rep. Juliet Uy of the province’s 2nd District, Naawan Mayor Jamie Roa, and MSU chancellor Proserpina Roxas.
