Manila Bulletin – Guanzon hopes Comelec’s iRehistro can begin in September

An official of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is hoping to begin their electronic registration project iRehistro when voter registration resumes in September.

Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon explained that the iRehistro will make the registration process faster.

“We hope we can begin iRehistro when we continue voter registration,” she said in an interview.

With iRehistro, Guanzon said, those who want to register as voters can download the registration forms and fill them up before lining up in the registration centers.

“This way the voters and COMELEC save time and the process becomes faster,” she said.

“However, they still have to appear at the registration centers because their biometrics will be required,” added Guanzon.

She said they are hoping that the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) can partner with them in implementing the project.

It was last April when the COMELEC en banc approved the implementation of iRehistro.

COMELEC Spokesman James Jimenez earlier said that the IRehistro project was essentially the same with the one they launched years before.

On Friday, the poll body announced the extension of the suspension of voter registration until August 31.
