The Senate committee on local government has recommended the conversion of the fourth district of Camarines Sur into the new province of Nueva Camarines.
Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., chair of the panel, said the recommendation was the “compromise” reached by proponents and oppositors of House Bill 4820, which seeks to divide Camarines Sur into two provinces and create the new province of Nueva Camarines.
“I already filed a committee report yesterday regarding the compromise agreement. One district will be made into a province, ‘yung fourth district,” Marcos told reporters in an interview on Thursday. The report will be presented to the Senate plenary on Monday.
Earlier, Senate Majority Floor Leader Vicente Sotto III admitted that senators were feeling pressure from members of the House of Representatives who were lobbying for the passage of the bill.
At least two senators, including Senators Antonio Trillanes IV and Joker Arroyo, have manifested their objection to the measure.
Camarines Sur Governor Luis Raymond “LRay” Villafuerte Jr. had said the division was a political maneuver meant to ensure the poll victories of its backers.
One of the “backers” is his father, Rep. Luis Villafuerte, who is on his third term as a congressman.
Rep. Villafuerte said he has plans of running for governor in their province. But if Camarines Sur is divided, he wouldn’t have to run against his son.
