GMA News Online – Liberal Party urges Supreme Court to junk Marcos poll protest vs. Robredo

By GMA News Online

The Liberal Party (LP) on Wednesday called on the Supreme Court (SC) to junk the election protest filed by former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. against its chairperson, Vice President Leni Robredo, and uphold the latter’s victory in the 2016 elections.

In a statement, LP said Robredo defeated Marcos by 263,474 votes in the 2016 vice presidential race.

“This lead further grew to 278,566 votes with an additional 15,093 votes from a recount that Mr. Marcos himself pushed for. Malinaw na panalo si VP Leni noong 2016. Malinaw na siya rin ang nagwagi sa recount,” LP said.

“Wala nang dapat hintayin pa ang Korte Suprema. Wala nang dahilan para pahabain pa ang kasong ito,” it added.

In delaying a decision, LP said the SC “only risks allowing itself to be an unwitting tool for the losing candidate, Mr. Marcos, to use the protest to spread lies and deceit.”

Moreover, LP said it remains confident that the truth will be upheld so the issue may be laid to rest.

“[W]e appeal to the Supreme Court to play its role in our democracy and put a stop to efforts to subvert the will of our people. We call on them to uphold Vice President Robredo’s victory in the 2016 elections.”

Earlier, Marcos’ camp said time is running out for the SC to decide his election protest against Robredo.

With less than two years left before the 2022 elections, the election protest pending before the court, sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), “is under real threat of becoming moot and academic,” Marcos’ spokesman, Vic Rodriguez said in a statement.

Rodriguez said the filing of candidacy, campaign, and national elections would “reduce the clamor and right of the people to know who really won the vice presidency illusory.”—Ma. Angelica Garcia/LDF, GMA News
