Emmanuel Christian School
The you very much indeed for that very kind introduction. To the Emmanuel Christian School officials, led by the school directress Dr. Ma. Ruby Ilmedo, the school president Mr. Gabriel Ilmedo, respected bishop Bishop Reynato Ilmedo, school principal Mrs. Ma. Lena V. Enverga, to the entire teaching staff as well as the non-teaching staff, employees and personnel of this institution, our dear graduates, most notably our awardees for academic excellence and other special honors, magandang umaga po sa inyong lahat.
To the other students and volunteers, who have also contributed to the successful staging of this extremely important event, most importantly of course to our proud, persevering and loving parents without whom this day would not have come, to all the relatives, the friends, the special friends who are here today, to give support and congratulations to our students, ladies and gentlemen, unang-una, maraming salamat po sa pag kumbida ninyo sa akin, inyong lingkod, at upang makasama kayo sa okasyong ito.
Nonetheless, despite this tight schedule, I specifically made time for your graduation day for the simple reason that occasions like these are extremely important, not only to the students, certainly not only to the parents, but to me your humble servant. As a public servant and an elected representative of the Filipino people, not only am I provided with an opportunity, but it is my bounded duty as well to give advice, to give hope, to inspire graduates to carry on their journeys in their life at the precise moment when our students are naturally receptive to advice, filled as they are with so much joy, gratitude and appreciation.
Likewise, I get the opportunity to address the parents and personally thank them and salute them for the sacrifices they’re making, this continuing investment in our children possible. Through your painstaking efforts, you equip your children, the youth of today, the hope of our nation, with the essential tools to become responsible, self-reliant and God-fearing citizens of tomorrow. All along, students thought they were the only ones experiencing anxiety attacks and sleepless nights. Well now, the truth can be told: the parents definitely suffer even more of those than you do and even worse. And for that, we always must take a time, a moment to salute them. Kudos to you, parents. Tuloy po ang kayod. I wish you the best of health and the continuing inspiration and perseverance to see through the optimal preparation of your children, of our children in becoming competent and productive members of society. And not to be outdone, much credit is likewise due to your teachers and administrators for fulfilling their sworn duties and performing the special roles with which they were entrusted by the parents and by society at large.
Education is a continuing process in life. Education, hard work and persistence, iyan ang forever. Habang buhay tayo nag-pupursige’t nag-aaral. Habang buhay tayo nagsasanay. Study pa more. Senior high school pa more.
Now, what you do after all the exhilaration brought about by this day has subsided and this must be the same exact thought that is lingering in the hearts and minds of your beloved parents, it’s time for you to pause for a while, reflect and discern on what you want to do with your lives. What do you envision as your career paths? What are your goals? What do you want to do for a living in the future? What are your interests and natural skills and abilities? Saan kayo magaling? Saan kayo maabilidad? Project yourself on to the future, envisioning your own version 2022 of yourself. Why not?
This self assessment and discernment is very important at this stage of your lives. Because grades 11 and 12 aim on specialization and shall focus on your special skills and your own interests. Hence, you have to plan ahead and charter the course of your careers this early in the hope of taking advantage of your formative years in order to boost your chances of succeeding in life and in carving out a bright future for your selves. And in doing so, carving out a bright future for your families, for your communities and for your country.
This is also a good time to consciously be aware of your natural skills and talents, especially the ones you did not know you had. Now, do this with the help of your parents who are able to watch you ever sine you were infants. But consult your parents and also consult your teachers. They were able to monitor your performance and demeanor in the classroom. I’m sure that they can give you sound advice and credible suggestions on what your strengths are and what you are good at.
Let us try to approximate how many hours you have so far put in your overall preparation in life. Having completed your grade 10 studies, 10 months in school is equal to 43 weeks. Tanggalin natin ang weekend that gives us 214 days. Pre-school plus grades 1-10 equals 12 years. A total of 2571 days. Assuming that you have deliberately studied or reviewed for at least an hour every day, as you had promised your teachers while you were in school, that you means you have put in an equivalent number of hours – 2571 hours. However, if you look at it well, this is but one-fourth of the so-called magic number of 10,000 hours to be good at any one thing. But of course I’m oversimplifying. My point is that if we were to believe and adhere to this formula for success then we still have a long way to go. However, the rule doesn’t factor in certain multiplier effects or so-called bonus points which we as Filipinos believe in and cherish. For example, what difference does our faith in God and the virtue of prayer make in this whole exercise? As Christians, we all believe that prayers work wonders and divine intervention significantly alter the course of our lives.
In any case, the whole point in the 10,000 hours is that natural ability, ability you think is a natural talent that you were born with un fact requires a huge investment in time. And they say a minimum of 10,000 hours. So this is not the end for you, dear graduates, but just the beginning of other challenges. This is not the time to get tired. This is not the time to say, “it’s time to stop.” When we do that, God will always be with us, hence, your school’s name Emmanuel. It is true that nothing is impossible when God is with us, we can do all things in Christ.
But once again, my dear graduates, I offer you my sincerest and heartfelt congratulations. I extend that congratulations to your parents and I extend that congratulations to your teachers.
