Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. got a taste of the enthusiasm of the so-called Solid North during an event in Paoay on Friday (October 16).
Marcos was in Ilocos Norte to lend his support to his mother, Ilocos Norte Second District Rep. Imelda Marcos, as the former first lady filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) for her third term of office.
Prior to the filing, the younger Marcos shared a meal with around 300 local officials and political leaders as well as representatives of nongovernment organizations and business groups — all of whom were present to show their support for Marcos’s bid for vice president.
He said he was thankful and encouraged by the people’s show of support.
He added: “The only way that I can ask the rest of the country’s support, for the rest of the country’s understanding, is only if I can say we have done it in Ilocos Norte: we are united, we are together, we are strong. That is what we need to do.”
A press release from the senator’s office explained: “The tendency of Ilocanos to vote as a bloc in support of a fellow Ilocano candidate has given rise to the term “Solid North.'”
The same release estimated that there are around six million Ilocano voters.
