abscbn_thumbMANILA – The Senate expects to save around P140 million after it scraps some oversight committees tasked to monitor the implementation of laws.

Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto told reporters on Tuesday that senators have agreed to slash the number of oversight committees from 39 to 20.

“The budget will be cut from 2013’s P540 million to about P400 million. I see significant savings of P140 million for 2013,” he said.

Recto added that the savings will be returned to the national treasury.

The Senate has yet to decide which committees to abolish, but Recto said senators will be given the chance to pick the oversight committees they would want to head based on their advocacies.

In a separate interview, Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he would propose that the committee he headed in the previous Congress, the oversight committee on Special Purpose Vehicle, be scrapped because it no longer serves any purpose.

Except for the four Senate officers, each senator will have an oversight committee to head. Each committee will have a budget of around P1.6 million a month, Recto said.
