MANILA, Philippines – Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is standing by his recommendation to reject the postponement of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao elections, even if it means going against the Aquino administration and adversely affecting the chances of his father being given a hero’s burial.
Marcos told reporters he sees no connection between the two issues.
He also revealed that Vice President Jejomar Binay has told him he already has recommendations on the matter of former President Ferdinand Marcos’ burial, but that he still doesn’t know what those are.
On Tuesday, Marcos, who heads the local government committee, junked the proposal to postpone the ARMM polls. He then moved to revive it, but clarified that it was only meant to subject the bill to debates and does not mean he has changed his stand.
Binay on Wednesday said President Aquino may finally disclose within the week his decision on the burial of former President Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. The Vice President, who was tasked to study the implications of the issue, said the decision is balanced, insofar as all opinions were considered.
“Every opinion from every person who responded to the survey was given consideration,” he said in a statement.
In April, his office sent out letters to political parties, civic organizations, senators and lawmakers with the aim of having a multi-sectoral consultation on the Marcos burial issue. The office also launched a text and email survey to encourage public participation on the matter.
Binay is a very close ally of Aquino’s mother, the late President Corazon Aquino. The Aquino family is considered a big part in turning the tides against the dictatorship of Marcos.
