Former Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is surprised and saddened when President Duterte dropped out of the senatorial race in 2022.
Marcos had wanted Duterte to seek a Senate seat but respected his ultimate decision to withdraw his candidacy.
“We are saddened by the unexpected withdrawal of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte from the Senate race. President Duterte has achieved so much for the country in a short period of time,” the presidential aspirant said in a statement.
“Although we welcomed with utmost gladness when he earlier filed his Certificate of Candidacy for senator, we respect the wisdom in his decision to withdraw his CoC,” he said.
Duterte went to the Commission on Elections to withdraw his senatorial candidacy on Tuesday, December 14. He will step down next year when his six-year presidential term ends.
His former aide, Senator Bong Go, also pulled out from the presidential race. The Politiko reported back in November that Duterte was likely to withdraw his Senate bid and embrace instead his role as political kingmaker.
Duterte has yet to endorse a preferred successor in the 2022 elections after his former aide pulled out from the presidential race. He earlier opposed the presidential bid of Marcos, calling him a spoiled and weak leader. He was also disappointed that Marcos persuaded his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte to slide down to vice president despite being the frontrunner in presidential surveys.
Despite Duterte’s tirade, Marcos chose to continue to show respect the incumbent leader.
If elected president next year, he also promised to continue Duterte’s legacy programs of the President, assuring him that his sacrifices won’t go to waste. The former senator is the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas standard bearer. Her running mate is the President’s daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio.
“If given the chance, the BBM-Sara UniTeam shall continue his legacy programs and, guided by his wisdom, even enhance some of them when necessary,” he said.
“Rest assured, Mr. President, your sacrifices for this country will not come to naught.
