PIALA TRINIDAD, Benguet, Feb. 8 (PIA) -– Officials and around 3,000 delegates from the different provinces of the region attended the opening of the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association(CARAA) meet at the Wangal Sports Complex here Sunday.

Kicking of the opening ceremonies was a parade from the Benguet Capitol to the sports complex. Each provincial contingent was joined by their respective local officials composed of congressmen, governors, mayors and other LGU officials.

Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., a great supporter of sports, was the guest of honor and speaker. He highlighted the importance of sports to the youth during his talk.

Marcos said that the regional sports meet is a good way of developing not only the sports skills of students but also their attitudes and personalities. The students are not only competing but they are also enjoying the camaraderie and learning from their fellow students from the different provinces, he pointed out.

The senator said the annual regional sports meet should be sustained. He noted that said that this kind of activity is being left out- it is not being budgeted well that is why only few athletes are pursuing their sports career.

Most of the budget of the Department of Education goes to infrastructure development and sports is being left out, he added.

The Senator encouraged the DepEd and the local officials to give more support to sports in their areas highlighting that sports does not only give glory to the students or schools but also to their own localities and to the country in the future.

He cited boxing champ and Congressman Manny Pacquiao, who is making the country proud as a world class athlete.

The elementary and high school student athletes will see action in 18 sports disciplines with bulk of the games to be played at the newly refurbished Wangal Sports Complex. Other venues for the different events are at the Benguet State University, Cordillera Career Development College, La Trinidad Gymnasium and the Benguet Capitol open court.

The CARAA 2011 hosted by the province of Benguet will run ends on February 10.
