REP. Juliette Uy of Misamis Oriental’s 2nd District has thrown her support for Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s bill that seeks to establish the “Katipunan ng Kabataan.”
If approved, the “Katipunan” would replace the Sangguniang Kabataan.
Uy, who initated a public forum with Marcos at the Mindanao State University (MSU) in Naawan town on Friday, said the proposed measure received strong support from the youth sector.
She said she was giving the proposal a “thumbs up,” even as she called for the passage into law of the youth sector reform bill.
Marcos is the chairman of the Senate committee on local governance, and the author of the “Youth Development and Empowerment Act of 2014.”
Uy said Marcos’s proposal has caught the interest of the youth sector as shown by how they reacted during the Naawan dialogue.
Uy said she would help in ensuring that the reform bill is approved by Congress by next year at the most.
“I invited Sen. Marcos here so that the youth could listen, and get answers about the SK,” said Uy.
During the forum, Marcos said once the bill becomes a law, the government would provide the initial fund of P50 million for the training and other youth-related activities and projects especially the elected officials who need to undergo mandatory training before they are allowed to hold public office.
He said the version increases the age limit from 15 to 17 years old to 15 to 30 years old, and gives full autonomy to youth councils.
