For its ‘tremendous’ role during Ondoy and Pepeng
Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. on Tuesday lauded both print and electronic media for keeping the public informed about the developments on the tragedy brought about by two powerful cyclones that hit the country recently.
The opposition lawmaker said the media played a significant role at the height of ‘Ondoy’ and ‘Pepeng’ while the weather disturbances struck practically the entire island of Luzon and even covered the aftermath and the immediate relief measures.
He extolled media’s role in the recent disaster as “tremendous,” noting that professional journalists put aside their personal interests to help victims and some of them even put their lives on the line just to deliver the news as they unfold.
“We would not have known about the victims of floods and landslides if not because of the media. That’s very clear. That’s why I find it necessary we recognize the tremendous role the media played during the onslaught of Ondoy and Pepeng,” Marcos said, as he revealed his plan to file a resolution honoring the Fourth Estate.
Marcos said the media deserve to be recognized along with other individuals who performed heroic deeds during Ondoy and Pepeng.
“We know that it is the duty of journalists to report on developments and disasters but I think this is the right time for them to know that their efforts and the role they played during the last two typhoons are appreciated. They were in fact the ones who have made us united,” Marcos said.
Marcos noted that at some point, media personnel were found in the midst of disaster fields extending their help. Some also initiated or joined various fund drives to help the government in the relief and rehabilitation efforts.
The opposition lawmaker also pointed out that there were some members of the Fourth Estate who themselves were victims of the typhoons, particularly Ondoy.
“It’s so disheartening to know that a lot of journalists were also affected by Ondoy and Pepeng and yet they had to fulfill their duties to the society at large,” Marcos said.
