THE Supreme Court yesterday went on its annual year-end recess and will resume session on January 4 next year.

“Per the 2020 SC Court Calendar, it’s the start of the intensive decision writing period today, which means that the Court is already on recess. But it’s the discretion of the SC to call for a special en banc session if there are urgent matters to tackle,” the SC PIO said.

But Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta has called for a special en banc session today, Tuesday, to tackle administrative cases pending before the High Court. But the SC declined to disclose the nature of the administrative cases.

Last month, Peralta issued a circular mandating a 4-day work week for all courts in the country.

The new work week scheme was implemented last December 1.

Under the set-up, court employees will work 10 hours daily or from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for an equivalent of 40 hours of work per week.

To ensure the courts will be open Monday to Friday, the circular mandated that employees should divide themselves into five groups, with each group comprising 20 percent of employees who will be assigned to take a day-off.

Peralta issued the circular after the SC conducted a study on how best to proceed while the country remains under the state of public health emergency due to the COVID- 19 pandemic.
