Fake Accounts in Facebook

15 November 2010

from Bongbong Marcos [facebook account] -

I would like to bring to the attention of all my friends here that there are some bogus accounts here on Facebook using my name, sometimes with a picture of myself and sometimes without one, purporting to be me and posting comments contrary to my beliefs and true sentiments. Facebook, and social networking in general, is a relatively new human activity, phenomenal as it is with half a billion (!!) accounts here just in Facebook. The sheer number alone requires enormous computing powers to enable instantaneous feedback, responses, or activity to each click of the hundreds of millions logged on simultaneously; and then you have the ethical, moral, legitimate aspects including the "impostor" issue that needs to be addressed. Facebook has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years and it is quite understandable that there would be occasional glitches, unresolved problems, hacker's interference, and other issues such as malicious accounts meant to disparage individuals. I am a victim of such activity as aforementioned above and as I commented earlier on a supposed post by Congressman Rudy Farinas (coming from a fake account pretending to be Rudy), his case is another in point.

We will make representations with Facebook on how this problem can be solved but obviously, it requires verification of true identities of individuals worldwide and that is a gargantuan task for any institution or company to undertake.

This clarification is just to bring to our attention and awareness the existence of such accounts so we are not easily duped by people whose intentions are to destroy reputations, alliances, friendships or to defame and degrade other individuals.

Thank you for giving your time to read this.

Mabuhay tayong lahat! Salamat po.
