Former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is considering running for president in next year’s elections, his sister, Senator Imee Marcos revealed yesterday.

“He has his own set-up, and he is running for president at the present time, but not officially declared. But he’s walking around with the possibility of a top spot,” Imee said in a television interview.

Bongbong lost to Vice President Leni Robredo in the 2016 polls. He also failed in his electoral protest and bid to unseat Robredo.

Imee said Bongbong has yet to decide whether to run for president, vice president or senator next year.

“My brother is going to run in the next elections. For what? We’re not certain. He’s also perfectly happy to run for the Senate, if that’s what is more likely,” she said.

Bongbong, the lone son of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, is tagged as a potential VP running-mate of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio who is also seen to be playing the political waiting game.

A photo of the Marcoses visiting Duterte-Carpio in Davao City in May fueled speculations of a possible Duterte-Marcos tandem.

If Carpio-Duterte will ultimately decide to run for president, Bongbong will have to slug it out with former defense secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. and House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez who have signified their intention to be her running-mate.

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go is also being seen as both a presidential timber and a VP candidate, but he has repeatedly said he is not thinking of running for higher office in 2022.
Imee said a Duterte-Marcos team will be a “strong tandem” and a “marriage made in heaven.”

She cited the strong support for the Dutertes in the south and the solid backing of voters for the Marcoses in the north.

“Everything’s possible. I suppose the most obvious thing is, if the Dutertes have the “solid south”, we are assumed to have the “solid north” — the Marcoses. That is like a marriage made in heaven” she said.

“Political wisdom says that you tote up the numbers, it looks good. Like a really solid tandem,” she added.
