In a rare move, presidential aspirant and former Senator Bongbong Marcos and his running mate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Thursday held at least two campaign rallies in one city in a bid to woo the Ilonggo vote.

Between stops, however, Bongbong’s team had a chance encounter with his rival Leni Robredo’s team in a hotel.

Leni’s team was led by outgoing Senator Franklin Drilon, with whom Bongbong and his crew, including Narvacan, Ilocos Sur Mayor Chavit Singson and some of his senatorial bets, exchanged pleasantries with like there was no political circus happening between them.

The tandem and their senatorial candidates held their first rally at the Iloilo Convention Center — located within the Iloilo Business Park in Madurriao — at 10 a.m.

Next stop for them was the Tamasak Arena and Football Field in Barotac Nuevo town, a second-class coastal municipality in Iloilo province, at 4 p.m.

Passi City Vice Mayor Jesry Palmares and former Iloilo representative Ferjenel Biron led the tandem’s campaign in Iloilo province.

In between those events, Bongbong and Sara met provincial and other local officials from Region 6 Western Visayas.

In a huddle with reporters after their meeting, re-electionist Roxas, Capiz Mayor Receliste Lachica Escolin said he and other political leaders convened with Bongbong and Sara in Iloilo City to express their support to their candidacies.

“Right now, we are here, we came from Antique, Aklan, Capiz, and Iloilo province to show our 100-percent support to the BBM-Sara tandem,” Escolin told the media.

The duo, he believes, can help the Philippines recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic considering the years they have been in public service.

Governor Rhodora Cadiao and Vice Mayors Jun-jun Pacificador and Te Dionela — all from Antique, Batad Mayor Elvira Alarcon, Kalibo Mayor Emerson Lachica, Zaraga Mayor John Taroza, and Leganes Mayor Junjun Jaen were among the officials who were present in the meeting.

Bongbong and Sara also met with some barangay captains of the city at the Richmonde Hotel.

During his speech, Bongbong promised to grant them the benefits provided under the Local Government Code.

“Benefits provided by the law must be given especially to the barangay captains. We will discuss how we can provide the scholarships that must be given to your children, and the most important thing right now especially amid the pandemic is health insurance,” Bongbong told the village officers.

He also vowed to grant barangay volunteers their honorarium.

Meanwhile, Sara underscored Bongbong’s experience in public service, from being a governor to senator — the reason why she chose him as her partner in the 2022 national elections.

She also boasted of the positions she held in the city of Davao and proudly stated that under her administration, the city has become “debt-free”.

“In my administration as mayor, first of all, Davao City became the fourth most competitive city in the entire Philippines,” she said.

“Davao City is also one of the top 10 richest cities in the country right now and that wasn’t easy to achieve,” she added.

The presidential daughter vowed to make all government services accessible regardless of one’s economic status.

The provinces of La Union and Pangasinan are the tandem’s next campaign stop.
