THE National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) has denied it has any ties with the opposition coalition, 1Sambayan.
“Namfrel does not support any specific political candidate or party as it remains non-partisan,” the election watchdog said in a statement on Wednesday.
Namfrel issued the clarification after a news report published in the Manila Bulletin on Tuesday claimed it has ties with 1Sambayan since its hostname server has Namfrel’s name in it.
The article also cited how 1Sambayan name redirects to Namfrel’s vote registration campaign web site as proof of the supposed link.
Namfrel, however, belied the connection, stating that it merely engaged an independent third-party application development company, which coincidentally also developed an app for 1Sambayan.
“To say that organizations using the same third-party servers are related to each other solely because of such shared third-party server use, is wrong and misleading,” Namfrel said.
Namfrel served as a citizen’s arm of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in dozens of past elections.
Meanwhile, 1Sambayan is a coalition of self-described prodemocracy groups and includes former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, former Ombudsman and Supreme Court Justice Conchita Carpio Morales, and former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario among its conveners.
