ABS-CBN News - Osmeña attributes 2016 loss to Comelec, Smartmatic cheating

5 April 2019

MANILA - Former senator Sergio Osmeña III on Friday reiterated his belief that he lost in the 2016 senatorial polls after the Commission on Elections andSmartmatic allegedly adjusted votes for other candidates.

Osmeña landed on the 14th spot in the previous elections, behind former Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chair Francis Tolentino.

The 75-year-old former lawmaker revived the allegation after he was asked in an interview on ANC Early Edition what went wrong with his 2016 bid.

"Cheating. The goddamned Comelec cheated me. Smartmatic and Comelec [cheated me] because they had to do that to get the numbers correctly," he said.

"I went down to number 11 from number 6 because they sold 8 seats at P50 million each, and they added 6 percent to those 8 seats," he said

"Second round got me, second round of cheating because they added 2 and a half percent to [Ralph] Recto and 2 and a half percent to Leila de Lima and deducted 2 percent from me," he said.

Officials of Smartmatic and Comelec have denied allegations of cheating in the 2016 polls.

Osmeña, however, admitted he had no evidence to back his claims.

"I spotted it right away because the last survey on May 3, 2016, it was exactly 6 and a half percent they added to those people," he said.

"I have evidence based on the final results. I have no evidence on how they did it because it was all done by computer," he said.

Should he succeed in this election, Osmeña said he would launch a probe on the supposed manipulation of votes.

"I'm trying to get enough votes to get to a higher position so if they cheat me again I will not drop out of the Magic 12," he said.
