Associate Justice Alfredo Caguioa was appointed to the Supreme Court in January 2016. Prior to his move to the judiciary, he has been a key figure in the executive branch under President Benigno Aquino III.
Caguioa served as the Chief Presidential Legal Counsel and the Department of Justice Secretary during Aquino’s term. Prior to this, he has been in private practice first as a partner in the Sycip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan law firm. The abogado also practiced with his father and Appellate Court Justice, Eduardo for a year before proceeding to establish Caguioa & Gatmaytan Law Firm.
The abogado is also part of the law academe. Caguioa taught Obligations and Contracts, Property, Statutory Construction, and Administrative Law in Ateneo Law, UST, and San Sebastian College.
As for his voting track record in the SC, he has been one of the dissenters in Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s plunder case and Marcos Burial at Heroes’ Cemetery.
